SKELETAL CHAIR
Utilizing ques from Eero Aarnio’s Bubble Chair form, the Skeletal Chair takes modern design principals and applies post-modern ideology to establish a modular and space-conscious approach to the iconic Bubble Chair silhouette.
The skeletal chair follows the same dimensions and formwork as the bubble chair, but where it begins to differ is how everything is put together. The bubble chair is one solid form made from fiberglass, which can be cumbersome and difficult to transport and place into a space.
The skeletal chair is completely modular, using a series of pins and joinery to create something that is incredibly modular and can be manipulated to easily transport the chair with just an understanding of assembly. The design and aesthetic of the pin system of the skeletal chair derives directly from the geometry and spacial ideas surrounding a whale skeleton. The natural formation of a whale’s skeletal system essentially relates to a backbone and a series of ribs that jut off of the backbone for form a large interior space between the forms. Additionally, a whale skeleton consists of a series of joints to create strong connections that interlock and create rigid and sturdy joinery, establishing a strong basis of how the connections of the skeletal chair can be introduced.
